Star Spotting at The Green
The North York Moors National Park became an International Dark Sky Reserve in 2020 alongside the Yorkshire Dales National Park and is one of only 24 in the world. A dark sky reserve is an area, often a national park or other large, protected area, that is specifically recognized for its exceptional quality of natural darkness and is protected from light pollution.

We are so proud to be in the heart of an international Dark Sky Reserve and as a village to be an official 'Dark Skies Friendly Community'. As you can see from the light pollution map below, we have very little light pollution in and around the village making it perfect for exploring the night sky. (Blue marker is Lastingham)
