I’ve been saying for ages that I was going to sit down and create a Google Map of all our favourite local farm shops, bakeries, honesty boxes and little village stores around the North York Moors… and thankfully the North York Moors National Park has gone and done a far better and much more professional job of it than I ever would have.
Their new “Food on the Go” map includes over 60 independent farm shops, delis, bakeries, village shops, zero waste stores and even vending machines across the area.
One of the things we absolutely love about being at The Green, Lastingham. North York Moors. is discovering - and repeatedly eating our way around - all these brilliant local producers.
There’s something very satisfying about buying bread that’s still warm, eggs with actual orange yolks, sometimes slightly wobbly vegetables not in plastic packaging with the dirt still on them and honey produced by bees probably living a nicer life than most of us.
We always hope our guests enjoy discovering them too because food genuinely does taste better when it’s fresh, local and hasn’t travelled for miles before arriving in your sandwich.
It’s also such a lovely way to support the small independent businesses that make this area what it is.
