A village pub, a short stroll from the The Green, Lastingham. North York Moors.… and very easy to get used to!
After a wander past the wells and a loop around St Mary’s Church, you’ll likely find yourself at the Blacksmiths Arms- partly for a drink, partly because it’s right there… and partly because it’s just an excellent, welcoming place to be.
The building dates from around 1700, though there’s likely been something here even earlier. The name comes from the trade that would have once been central to village life - a blacksmith keeping horses shod and tools in working order. Whether the forge stood exactly here or just nearby, it’s a reminder of how practical (and well-named) these places used to be- I'd love to know more about its history.
I did find a great story from the 1700s - the licence was held by the local curate’s wife, who helped support her family by running the pub, fishing in the beck and even entertaining guests with violin playing. A proper multitasker.
These days, it’s a warm, welcoming spot with good food and an easy atmosphere — the kind of place you plan to stop for one and stay a little longer.
And when it’s only a few steps back to the cottage… it tends to become part of the routine.
