Spooky Season is Coming to the Green

Oct 7
2 min read

Hardly seems believable, but October half term is now just under two weeks away. I absolutely love this time of year and seem to up my spooky game a little more every October, much to the delight (or possibly embarrassment) of the boys.

The pumpkins are already starting to appear locally, and we’ll definitely be making our annual trip to The Flower Belt to choose ours. There’s something about wandering through a field full of pumpkins in wellies that makes it officially feel like autumn.

York’s ghosts have returned too. Ghosts in the Gardens is back and bigger than ever this year, with 70 ghostly figures hiding in gardens, around the city walls, on balconies and in some rather unexpected corners of York. It’s free to explore, so we’ll definitely be seeing how many we can find when we have our big day out in the city.

And because apparently finding 70 ghosts isn’t quite enough Halloween for one day, I’ve also booked us onto a spooky bus tour around York. I’m not entirely sure whether I’m looking forward to that one or whether I’ll regret it once it gets dark.

Closer to the Green, Ryedale Folk Museum in Hutton-le-Hole is getting in on the act too. From 17th October, the museum is being “haunted”, with ghosts appearing amongst the old buildings for visitors to hunt down. I think that one might have to go on our half-term list as well.

There’s plenty more going on locally too, with Halloween fun and trick-or-treating on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, autumn adventures in Dalby Forest and, if you fancy venturing a little further, Whitby. With its ruined abbey illuminated and looming over the town, winding old streets and Dracula connections, it’s surely one of the best places anywhere for a properly atmospheric autumn day out.

I’m busy planning our half term at the Green now and, as usual, I suspect I’m trying to squeeze far too much into it.

If you’re staying with us this October, or heading to the North York Moors

for half term, I’ll be sharing a few more of our favourite autumn and Halloween things to do over the next couple of weeks.

Now I just need to decide how many pumpkins is too many pumpkins for the Green…
