Our Yorkshire Pub Rescue with Jon Richardson

It’s been lovely to see our local area getting so much attention on national TV recently, and it’s left me feeling inspired for half term and plenty of future adventures.

I thoroughly enjoyed Our Yorkshire Pub Rescue with Jon Richardson on More4. It really made me realise what a beautiful part of the world this is, showcasing the strong community spirit and the warmth and personality of the people here. I honestly can’t wait for The Plough Community Pub. Fadmoor to reopen, and seeing it featured on TV makes it even more exciting to have trodden in footsteps that so many viewers will now recognise. It was also lovely to spot local favourites such as Helmsley Brewing Co. and Scrumptious Deli & Caterers in Kirbymoorside getting a mention.

This came hot on the heels of Robson Green’s Weekend Escapes on BBC iPlayer, where, alongside the stunning scenery of our neighbouring village Hutton-le-Hole and the Ryedale Folk Museum, we were treated to seeing the local area in a whole new light. From the charm of Grosmont and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to the wild beauty of the coast, it was a real celebration of the region. I had no idea that Saltwick Bay (not too far from Lastingham!) was such a fossil hunter’s paradise — and I can’t wait to take the children there, both of whom are budding palaeontologists.

Finally, the other night I was trawling through BBC iPlayer looking for something gentle to watch when I came across Julia Bradbury’s Wainwright Walks – A Coast to Coast Walk. I watched Episode 5, Mowbray to the Moors, followed by Episode 6, The End of the Road. I was particularly drawn to the North York Moors section, taking in places such as the Rosedale Ironstone Railway, the timeless beauty of Farndale, and the welcome sight of The The Lion Inn, Blakey Ridge perched high on Blakey Ridge. The final stretch towards Robin Hood’s Bay was especially inspiring and led me to buy A Coast to Coast Walk — not only so I can tackle that last leg myself one day, but also to share this beautifully illustrated book with our guests at the cottage.

Feeling very lucky to be part of such a beautiful corner of the world.
