A little piece of history right next door…

One of the things that makes staying here so special is what’s right on the doorstep. The village green sits just beside The Green, Lastingham. North York Moors., and just beyond that you’ll find St Mary’s Church – and tucked quietly just over the bridge there's St Cedd’s Well, which is quite literally right next door to the cottage.

We thought it might be interesting to share a little more about it.

The well is traditionally linked to St Cedd, a 7th-century monk who founded a monastery here in Lastingham around AD 654.

In early Christian settlements like this, natural springs and wells were an important part of daily life – providing water, but also becoming places of reflection and, in some cases, pilgrimage. St Cedd’s Well is one of these, and over time it became associated with him and the early monastic community here.

There are actually several wells and springs dotted around the village and surrounding area, which adds to that sense of Lastingham as a place shaped by its early history and landscape.

It’s easy to walk past without realising, but knowing a bit of the story behind it makes it feel all the more special – a quiet, historic corner of the village, just a few steps from the cottage.
