The North York Moors National Park became an International Dark Sky Reserve in 2020 alongside the Yorkshire Dales National Park and is one of only 21 in the world. A dark sky reserve is an area, often a national park or other large, protected area, that is specifically recognized for its exceptional quality of natural darkness and is protected from light pollution.
We are so proud to be in the heart of an international Dark Sky Reserve, as you can see from the light pollution map below, we have very little light pollution in and around the village making it perfect for exploring the night sky. (Blue marker is Lastingham)
As the nights draw out, the skies grow darker and we head into Autumn and Winter we have decided to add some new items to help our guests enjoy the wonderful views of the sky Lastingham has to offer. We will now have available a selection of books, maps and charts to explore and learn more about the night sky, we also have a new Dobson telescope (really easy to use and great for beginners), some comfy deckchairs and blankets plus red light torches (which don't create so much light pollution). We've also put together a handy list of links to places to visit and events to help you make the most of your visit.
Please just let us know in advance of your stay and we will make sure everything is out and ready for you to start star spotting when you next come to visit the Green!
